Gazmend Freitag – BÄUME
Eine Hommage
«Bäume sind Gedichte, die die Erde in den Himmel schrieb» KHALIL GIBRAN
Sie spenden Schatten, Trost und Wärme. Sie erfreuen das Herz und inspirieren Künstler und Poeten. Ob in der Stadt, im Wald, am Rande des Ackers oder hoch auf den Bergen – ohne sie wäre unser Leben nicht nur ärmer, sondern überhaupt nicht möglich.
Nicht nur der Klimawandel macht ihnen zu schaffen. Im Amazonas wird Regenwald für den Anbau von Soja als Futtermittel gerodet. In Rumänien fällt die Holzmafia die letzen großen Naturwälder Europas und verkauft sie im Baumarkt um die Ecke als Brennholz und Holzprodukte. Und die bei uns üblichen Monokulturen von schnell wachsenden Nadelbäumen, in Kombination mit langen Trockenperioden und warmen Wintern, zeigen sich als besonders anfällig für Schädlinge.
Was können wir tun? Was müssen wir tun?
Ich mache mich mit Leinwand und Farben auf den Weg, um ihre Schönheit und Vielfalt– selbst im Verfall- festzuhalten und auf diese Weise ihre Rolle in unserem Leben in den Vordergrund zu rücken.

An homage
“Trees are poems the earth writes upon the sky.” KHALIL GIBRAN
They provide shade, solace and warmth. They bring joy to the heart and inspire artists and poets. Whether in the city, in the forest, at the edge of a field or high up in the mountains – without them our life would not only be poorer but not possible at all.
They are troubled by climate change. In the Amazon ancient rainforests are clear-cut for the cultivation of soybeans as animal feed. In Romania the Wood mafia is chopping down the last remaining European virgin forests, to be sold as kindling and timber at the home improvement store around the corner. And our customary monocultures of fast growing conifers, combined with long periods of draught and increasingly warm winters, have shown themselves especially susceptible to pests.
What can we do? What must we do?
I set out with canvas and paint to capture their beauty and diversity- even in decay- and to move their role in our lives to the fore.
